WHAT MAKES A GOOD CUSHION?
Pressure Care
You may wonder why pressure is seen as a problem by the medical world requiring both management and specialist cushioning. After all, it is pressure (and of course gravity) which allows us to stay in our seats. The problem is to do with the human ischial tuberosities (ITs) – otherwise known as the sharp, bony bits in the human buttocks. These ITs are rough, pointy bits of bone covered with small amounts of flesh and by sitting on them, we are putting those thin tissues covering the bone under high risk of damage from the pressure exerted on them.
Apart from the ITs, another major boney area at risk of pressure and shear injuries is the sacral/coccyx area at the base of the spine which has little skin protection. Pressure sores, lesions and ulcers can quickly become established in these boney areas if someone is sitting for long periods of time without movement.
How cushioning helps manage pressure issues
Pressure relief cushions are designed to redistribute the weight of the user over a larger surface area reducing peak pressure zones on the skin. They work by minimising the forces of shear and friction which cause rubbing against the skin exacerbating pressure sore risk. Cushions are breathable to prevent the build-up of sweat and moisture on the skin which can increase pressure sore issues.
